About

Owlpen

Owlpen is one of the most romantic and secluded spots in the Cotswolds — a tiny hamlet in a steep-sided combe above Uley, centred on Owlpen Manor, one of the most photographed historic houses in England. The manor, parts of which date from the fifteenth century, sits at the foot of a wooded hillside surrounded by formal terraced gardens, with the medieval church of the Holy Cross immediately beside it and a mill at the bottom of the valley. The entire composition, seen from the lane above, is arrestingly beautiful.

Owlpen Manor has been restored and is now a holiday complex, with the great hall and several estate cottages available for rent. The house is open for tours on certain days and contains notable historic interiors including Queen Margaret's chamber, associated with Margaret of Anjou who is said to have sheltered here in 1471. The formal yew topiary in the garden is of considerable age and has a grandeur that perfectly complements the Perpendicular stonework of the house.

The surrounding valley is excellent walking country, with the escarpment above and the village of Uley just below both within easy reach. Owlpen is close to Nailsworth and within a short drive of Tetbury, making it accessible despite its air of profound seclusion. The Uley Bury Iron Age hillfort on the escarpment directly above is one of the more impressive prehistoric earthworks in Gloucestershire.
