The Film That Beat The Godfather for Best Director

Bob Fosse's 1972 adaptation of Cabaret gets a big-screen outing at the Playhouse. It took eight Academy Awards that year, including a Best Director win for Fosse over Francis Ford Coppola, even though The Godfather carried off Best Picture.

Fosse staged nearly every musical number inside the Kit Kat Klub itself, so nobody breaks into song on the street: the numbers comment on the story from the stage while the Nazi party's rise plays out in Weimar Berlin beyond the club walls. Liza Minnelli won Best Actress as Sally Bowles, and Joel Grey, reprising the role he created on Broadway, took Best Supporting Actor as the Emcee. Certificate 15, 124 minutes.

Few musicals from any decade have earned their darkness this honestly.
