The Skies Above Rodborough, On Canvas at the Goods Shed

Charlotte Aiken paints clouds she has photographed herself, often over Rodborough Common near her Stroud studio, then lets the structure of each formation dictate how the composition builds on the canvas. She works the imperfections rather than smoothing them out, so the finished pieces read less like weather reports and more like something caught mid-thought.

Aiken graduated from London Metropolitan's School of Art, Architecture and Design in 2017, picking up the Graduate Art Prize with ARTIQ and the Chris Rowley Prize that same year. Her paintings have since hung in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition across multiple recent years, at D Contemporary in Mayfair and GPS Gallery in Soho, and sit in collections as far off as Canada and Germany. This new body of work draws on Renaissance and Baroque ceiling frescoes, borrowing their handling of colour overhead for her own layered skies.

She will be at the Goods Shed on the evening of 23 September, talking through the work with anyone who drops in.

The clouds on these canvases are the same ones over Rodborough Common on the drive in, just slowed down enough to look at properly.
