Shipston History Talk: Stories from Shipston Union Workhouse

📅 Saturday, 21 November 2026 at 14:30📍 Townsend Hall, 52 Sheep Street, Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire CV36 4AE

About this event

Mabel Hyatt's life behind the workhouse walls

Maggie Wood follows Mabel Hyatt, a young woman from Great Wolford who entered Shipston Union Workhouse around 1887 and, apart from several absences, stayed for nearly 20 years. Stories of other residents widen the talk beyond one life, giving a human focus to a difficult part of local history.

Built north of Shipston between 1836 and 1838, the workhouse could hold up to 300 inmates and had separate accommodation wings, a school and a chapel. That setting helps put Mabel's long stay into perspective, rather than leaving the workhouse as a name on an old map.

Townsend Hall has level entry throughout, with a mobile stage lift available on request. Free parking is listed for the event, and under-16s must attend with a parent or legal guardian; contact the hall in advance if you need the lift.

Ticketed. Advance tickets are available at Richard Harvey's and The Flower House in Shipston-on-Stour, with remaining tickets on the door subject to availability.
