📍 Cirencester

About this event
Alice Loxton uses 21 paintings to explore the people, events and social changes behind Britain's history. From Millais' Ophelia to Elizabeth I's Rainbow Portrait, the talk considers how art has reflected and influenced the story of a nation.
Loxton is a historian, presenter and Sunday Times bestselling author, and her fourth book, A History of Britain in 21 Paintings, is due from Penguin in November 2026. Each artwork opens a different piece of Britain's past, ranging from royal portraits to scenes of everyday life.
Bingham Hall's main hall is wheelchair and pushchair accessible, with accessible toilets nearby. Parking on King Street is limited, and the festival recommends the Forum and Beeches car parks, so allow time before the 4.30pm doors. The event is sponsored by The Arts Society Corinium.
Ticketed. Booking required.
