About this event

Frosted by the sea, set in silver

Sea glass is old glass. Bottles, tableware, even shipwreck remains, tumbled by waves and chemically weathered by saltwater for 20 to 100 years until sharp edges round off and the gloss disappears, leaving the frosted surface that makes it worth setting in the first place.

Tutor Fiona Dowling (BA Edinburgh College of Art, MA Royal College of Art, 20 years in the jewellery trade) guides you through the full silversmithing process over a single day. You start with silver wire in 2mm or 3mm gauge, marking, sawing and filing before forming and hammering into shape. Fiona then teaches soldering for joins, hand-stamping or texturing the surface, and building a bezel setting from scratch to secure the sea glass onto the band.

The aim is one finished bangle made to your size, with remaining time for additional pieces. Sea glass is provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. All tools are included; expect to pay approximately £60 to £120 to the tutor on the day for silver and stones. Beginners welcome.
