The Folk Duo With Two Radio 2 Trophies Plays the Hall on the Hill

Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have been voted Best Duo at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards twice, in 2013 and 2016, and this rural touring date puts that pedigree somewhere about as close-up as it gets: the church rooms above Chalford that locals still call the Hall on the Hill.

Lakeman is one of three musical brothers, with Seth on fiddle and Sam on piano, and built his own name producing his brother's gold-selling album Freedom Fields before working as a session and touring guitarist for acts including Bellowhead and Billy Bragg. Roberts arrived first: her 1995 record with Kate Rusby was named Album of the Year by fRoots magazine, years before she and Lakeman began performing together and later married. On stage they draw on that shared history, guitar and piano, two voices that have been singing together for more than two decades, moving between traditional material and songs of their own.

A village hall booking with two Radio 2 Folk Award wins behind it doesn't come along often.
