Hugh Cornwell plays Nosferatu live in full — for the first time

Hugh Cornwell wrote the songs that defined The Stranglers: Golden Brown, Peaches, No More Heroes, Nice & Sleazy, Strange Little Girl, Always The Sun. He left the band in 1990 and has been recording and touring under his own name ever since. This August at the Subscription Rooms, the focus is a different record entirely.

Nosferatu was recorded in Los Angeles in 1979 while Cornwell was still in The Stranglers, with Robert Williams of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band behind the kit. The album gathered a remarkable roster of collaborators: Devo's Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh play on "Rhythmic Itch", Ian Dury appears as a fairground barker on "Wrong Way Round", and Frank Zappa's keyboardist Ian Underwood features throughout. It barely made a dent on release. Forty-seven years later, Cornwell plays it live in its entirety for the first time, with long-time drummer Windsor McGilvray and bassist Pat Hughes, before moving through Stranglers choice cuts and solo material. Support from retro rock duo The Courettes.
