Amateur pianists take the stage in a former railway shed

Tetbury Goods Shed once unloaded freight for the town's branch line. These days its exposed ironwork and timber roof frame a monthly recital for pianists who've put in the practice hours but rarely play beyond their own front room. Piano Club grew out of the venue's popular Wednesday afternoon concerts and now runs as its own regular date.

Performers are amateurs, some retired professionals, others lifelong hobbyists, playing to a room that's there specifically to listen. The programme changes every session and isn't fixed in advance; anyone wanting to play gets in touch with the venue directly to be added to the roster. The Whistle Stop Café stays open through the afternoon for tea between pieces.

There's something different about hearing a piece someone has worked on for months, played in a shed built for freight rather than performance.
