About this event

Learning to Fold, Mould and Print with Handmade Paper

Eleanor Burkett spent years in Fukushima learning traditional Japanese papermaking, then built a practice around Tohoku's paper textiles: shifu woven paper cloth, kamiko paper garments, techniques most UK textile workshops never touch. This day at the Museum in the Park is her invitation into that world, one of the tutor workshops running alongside UNmaking, the Textile Study Group's exhibition in the gallery through early November.

You start by strengthening paper with a specialist paste, then mould it around shapes so it holds a three-dimensional form, and press embossed patterns into the surface once it has set. The second half of the day moves into combining paper with fabric, working paper yarns in alongside cloth to see how the two materials respond to the same handling.

Paper stops behaving like paper by the end of the day: it holds a shape, takes a print, and sits next to cloth as an equal material.
