About this event

Carving Your Name in Viking Script

The Corinium Museum is best known for its Roman mosaics and Cotswold limestone gods — but more than a thousand years after the legions left, the Norse world was carving its own mark into stone in a script that looked nothing like the Roman alphabet. This workshop brings that tradition to life at the workbench.

Participants learn how Viking runes worked — an alphabet used not just for writing but for memorial stones, weapons and charms — and then carve their own runestone with inscriptions they choose themselves. All materials are provided and no experience is needed; suitable for ages 8 and up, which in practice means adults find it just as absorbing as children.
