About this event
Hilary Manuhwa grew up learning stone carving from his father, Damien, in Chitungwiza, a second-generation sculptor now based in England. The Shona tradition he works within emerged in the 1950s as one of the most significant sculptural movements in Africa, known for its use of springstone and serpentine to create fluid, figurative forms with deep spiritual roots. This two-day workshop at the Cotswold Sculpture Park is a chance to learn those techniques from someone who carries them from source.
Over Saturday and Sunday (25th to 26th July), Hilary guides participants from raw stone through shaping, refining, and polishing to a finished piece. Groups are capped at ten, all tools and materials are provided, and you take your sculpture home at the end. No prior experience is needed, and the setting, a working sculpture park with Zimbabwean stone pieces permanently on display nearby, gives the whole thing useful context.
