About this event

Poppies that never wilt, wired stem by stem

Laura Milne is a Swindon-based wire artist whose work traces back to details she notices on countryside walks, a seed head, the curl of a stem, the particular droop of a poppy past full bloom. She's become a regular guest tutor at the Craft Barn, running wire sessions on daisies, alliums and seasonal wreaths alongside this poppy workshop, and her own pieces often combine wirework with driftwood or crystals.

This session covers three stems: a poppy in full bloom and two seedheads, worked in different gauges of wire using joining techniques suited to basic and medium skill levels. Laura talks through the tools that take a wire form from bare skeleton to finished detail, the crimped seed capsule, the thin curl of a petal edge. No previous wirework is needed; she teaches from first principles.

Once finished, the stems stand well on their own in a narrow-necked vase or bottle, or slot into a dried or fresh arrangement, poppies that hold their shape long after the real ones have dropped their petals.

Two and a half hours is enough to leave with three finished pieces, not just a half-started project to take home.
