About this event

Darning as Decoration, Not Disguise

Lewis & Wood prints its fabrics and wallpapers at a mill in Woodchester, and for one morning the light-filled top-floor studio above the workshop turns into a mending class, stocked with a stash of the company's own fabric remnants for anyone who needs a patch.

Textile artist Liz Taylor leads the session, teaching the same slow stitch approach she runs workshops in across the Stroud area: traditional embroidery and darning used on purpose, so the repair becomes part of the garment rather than something to hide.

Expect appliqué patch mending for jeans, jackets and shirts, plus a proper look at darning knitwear, picking the right wool, needle and technique so a worn elbow or heel becomes a feature instead of a flaw. Bring an item that needs saving, or turn up and practice on a spare piece, materials and tools are supplied either way, with refreshments included and free parking on site.

The group stays small, so there's time for Taylor to work through problems piece by piece. A morning here means old jumpers and jackets get a second life instead of a bin bag.
