About this event

The Devilish Last Round Comes Back to Market Square

Corn merchants used to trade out of Witney Town Hall until local businessmen financed a purpose-built exchange on Market Square in 1863. Architect John Collier gave it a neoclassical design, builder Malachi Bartlett raised it in ashlar stone, and it replaced a Tudor-era Corn Returns Office that had stood on the site since 1593. Grade II listed since 1970, the hall now hosts Witney Town Council's monthly quiz, and September's edition is one of a run that carries through to an all-1980s special in October.

Teams of six work through a mix of sport, film, TV, history and geography, along with a connections round, an intros round, and the last round the compere warns you about in advance. The big screen handles the visuals and audio, and a voucher prize goes to whoever tops the table. The 1863 Café & Bar, named for the year the hall went up, stays open for coffee and drinks between rounds.

Getting the last round wrong with total conviction is half the fun.
