Warp to Wall Hanging: Frame Loom Weaving with Julie Hicks

New Brewery Arts runs textile workshops throughout the year, and this is one of the more hands-on ones. Weaving on a frame loom is one of those crafts where every decision you make — yarn weight, colour order, how tight you pull each knot — shows up directly in the piece. There's no hiding your choices in the surface.

Tutor Julie Hicks, a textile artist with a degree in textile design, takes you through the whole process from an empty frame. You'll start by warping the loom, laying the vertical foundation threads, then spend the rest of the day building texture using a range of techniques: Rya knots and looped rya for shaggy, plush areas; Soumak braid for raised, sculptural lines; Egyptian knots for dense, patterned sections.

Julie advises on yarn choice, colour placement and tension throughout, so the weave sits well rather than puckering. By the end of the afternoon you'll have secured the final weft, added a dowel and trimmed the piece — a finished wall hanging ready to go straight up at home.

All materials and equipment included. Suitable for all abilities, including complete beginners. Adults only (18+).
