Handbuilt Pottery: Sgraffito Candlestick Holder

Build the form, then scratch the pattern into clay

Start with clay slabs, shape a candlestick holder and add handles before decorating the surface with coloured slips. The sgraffito stage cuts through that colour to reveal the clay beneath, so the pattern becomes part of the pot rather than sitting on top.

The workshop suits beginners and returning potters aged 18 or over, with materials and firing included. Wear an apron, tie back long hair and remove jewellery; finished pieces should be ready to collect in about six weeks.

New Brewery Arts has step-free access to most public areas and nearby public parking, but it is sensible to contact the venue about any studio-specific access requirement. That small check aside, this is a chance to take one object through both construction and surface decoration.
