An Off-Grid Weekend for Women Who'd Rather Be in a Tent

Ashen Plains has run off its own solar array since 2014, a fifty-acre site cut into beech woodland on Stinchcombe Hill above Dursley, close enough to the Cotswold Way that you could wander onto it without noticing you'd left the trees.

This weekend it's booked out entirely by Camper Gurlz, a Cardiff-run community now five years into organising camping "escapes" for LGBTQ+ women across Wales and the Borders, and this trip is one of the rare ones that crosses the Severn into Gloucestershire.

Arrivals start Friday evening for two nights under canvas, in a van or in a motorhome, with nobody turned away for coming solo. Hostess Angharad runs two campfire evenings built around ice-breaker games to get first-timers talking, and the days in between are loosely structured around forest bathing, stargazing and walks out to the Tyndale Monument, Cam Long Down and Uley Bury.

A wood-burner-heated common room and proper showers mean it's not a fully off-grid weekend, whatever the solar panels suggest.

Camper Gurlz weekends tend to sell out on pitches rather than tickets, so a spot at Ashen Plains this September is worth locking in early.
