Colour from the Ground Up

Sophie Bowen works with natural dyes the way some people work with watercolour: with close attention to what the season gives you, and a willingness to let the material lead. Her practice at New Brewery Arts has grown out of a textile MA at Bath Spa and years observing the slow shift of colour across the Somerset and Cotswold landscape.

This full-day workshop introduces you to making dye baths from plants, and the results go home with you. You will dye a selection of silk and wool fibres, work with mordants, and learn how to source dye plants for future use. The approach suits beginners but it is not a beginner's craft session in feel: Sophie brings enough depth and curiosity to make it interesting for anyone who cares about materials and process.
