The cake that works as an archaeological trench

Stratigraphic profiling is how archaeologists work out what happened in what order at a dig site, by reading the layers of soil in a trench from bottom to top. At this Corinium Museum summer workshop, the stratigraphy is a layer cake, baked with discoveries hidden inside each tier.

Children excavate carefully through the layers, recording what they find and where, exactly as field archaeologists do. The sequence matters: an object found in a lower layer predates one found higher up. By the time the site is fully excavated, each child has built a picture of when their buried discoveries arrived, using real stratigraphic logic. Then the evidence gets consumed.

The workshop runs 10:30am to midday and costs £10 to £12.50. Suitable for ages 7 and above; the museum asks parents of younger children to enquire in advance. Booking is essential via coriniummuseum.org.
