Handling real specimens from the museum stores

The Corinium is best known for its Roman mosaics, but this summer workshop goes back far further than any Roman. Jurassic and Devonian seas once covered what became the Cotswold hills, and the session starts with children placing fossil creatures along a geological timeline, from the Devonian through to the Jurassic.

From there it turns hands-on: participants make fossil moulds in modelling compound to show how casts form in rock, then handle real specimens from the museum's own stores, including echinoids, ammonites, and a mammoth leg bone and tooth.
