Workshop - Craft a Prehistoric Axe Head

From flint to bronze: mould your own prehistoric axe head

Prehistoric people didn't use just one type of axe — the design changed dramatically across thousands of years, and archaeologists use a technique called seriation to map that evolution by shape alone. At this Corinium workshop, children get to handle reproduction axe heads spanning that entire timeline before making their own.

Using a quick-set moulding material, they cast a set of axe heads to take home and display. The workshop runs after a tour of the Prehistory Gallery, so children see the originals in context before starting work.
