Four Strings Take On the West End

St Mary's has anchored Church Green since the 12th century, its 156-foot spire raised on the wool money that once made Witney rich. On this September Saturday it hosts something considerably lighter: a touring string quartet working through the songbook of modern musical theatre.

Candelabra Concerts run this format in churches across the country, stripping down orchestral scores from The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Wicked, Hamilton, The Greatest Showman, Mamma Mia and Mary Poppins to four instruments and letting the melodies carry the room. Two performances run on the day, an afternoon matinee and an evening sitting, each a tight 70 minutes.

Hearing Defying Gravity or A Spoonful of Sugar arranged for strings alone under a medieval stone roof is a different experience to the cast recording, and a quieter one.
