About this event

A Bristol Jazz Festival director, singing standards in a Roman gallery

Katya Gorrie runs the Bristol Jazz Festival as artistic director and fronts Moscow Drug Club, the Bristol gypsy jazz and cabaret outfit built on Tom Waits covers that's carried her through eight albums and tours across Europe and North America. Cirencester gets a different side of her voice: a straight four-piece working through jazz standards and the American songbook, no cabaret theatrics, just voice, sax, guitar and double bass.

She started performing professionally at eleven, touring with her parents' theatre company as an actor, dancer, singer and puppeteer before training classically in voice and later studying jazz at a college in Vancouver. That grounding shows in how she phrases a lyric rather than just sings it. She's backed here by saxophonist Dan Newbury, guitarist Andy Bowen and bassist Paul Jefferies, in the Jazz Club's regular room inside the Corinium Museum, where the stone galleries do more for the atmosphere than any purpose-built venue could.

Few singers running their own festival still play rooms this small.
