About this event

A new duo, five centuries of stained glass overhead

Adrian Partington and Leora Cohen have shared only a handful of concert dates so far this year. He has spent close to two decades as Director of Music at Gloucester Cathedral, an organ scholar at Windsor and King's College, Cambridge before that. She graduated with a double first from Cambridge and a distinction from the Royal College of Music, and spent two years touring with the LGT Young Soloists, performing for Liechtenstein's royal family and opening the Heidelberg Festival.

Their programme for Fairford, "From Bach's Elegance to Gershwin's America," spans four composers across three centuries, with tea and cake served partway through the two-hour recital. Cohen has built her reputation partly on programming that goes beyond the standard repertoire, seeking out female and contemporary composers other recitalists skip. St Mary's supplies its own history alongside theirs: the church holds 28 stained glass windows glazed between 1500 and 1517 for wool merchant Edmund Tame, attributed to Barnard Flower, glazier to Henry VII, the only complete medieval set left in an English parish church.

Two performers still finding their footing together, playing under glass that has survived five hundred years intact.
