The Sheffield Cello Teacher Whose Album Got Remixed by Electronic Producers

Liz Hanks teaches cello to schoolchildren across Sheffield as an accredited instructor with the city's Music Hub, alongside posts at Sheffield High School for Girls and Sheffield Music Academy. It's a day job that sits at odds with a touring history that has put her onstage with Richard Hawley, Kate Rusby and Smokey Robinson, and further still from what she makes under her own name.

Her debut album Land layers solo cello over field recordings of birdsong and open ground, built around the buried landscape beneath her own Sheffield neighbourhood. BBC Radio 3's Elizabeth Alker called it "stunning" on air, and the record found an audience well outside folk circles: electronic producers Haiku Salut, Jason Singh, Richard Norris and Leafcutter John each took a track and reworked it for a companion remix album.

At Northleach she plays it the other way round, cello alone, no remix layer, no recorded birdsong, just the instrument in a building built to hold a single sustained note.
