About this event
John Carney has made a career out of films where music saves people from themselves. Once, Begin Again, Sing Street. Power Ballad follows the same instinct: Rick (Paul Rudd) is a long-past-his-prime wedding singer who meets Danny (Nick Jonas), a faded boy-band star, at a gig. They bond over music and a late-night jam session. Then Danny takes one of Rick's songs, turns it into the hit that reignites his own career, and Rick has to decide how far he's prepared to go to get the credit he's owed.
It's a comedy with some real edge to it. Rudd is the kind of actor who can make you root for someone even when they're behaving badly, and Carney knows exactly how to use a well-placed song as a gut punch. The film scored well with audiences on its cinema run earlier in the year, and it's worth catching on a proper screen rather than a laptop. BBFC rated 15.
