Eight Doors Open in Charlton

Around eight gardens across this small Wiltshire village near Malmesbury open their gates on the last Saturday of June, offering a rare look at what's growing behind the walls, fences and hedges of a proper English village.

The trail is varied by design. Traditional cottage planting sits alongside walled gardens, small woodlands, fruit and vegetable plots, water features and at least one larger modern garden. There's also a meadow and trees garden set aside specifically for relaxation — a quieter stop on the trail. The Horse & Groom pub (grade II-listed, dating to the 16th century) opens its tree-sheltered lawn as part of the trail, and the cricket club and St. John the Baptist church are also included.

Tea and refreshments at the village hall throughout the afternoon. Toilets on site.£6 adults, accompanied children free.
