About this event
Broadway's amateur growers, bakers and crafters have squared off on the village green for the RHS-affiliated Horticultural & Craft Show for as long as most exhibitors can remember. It's run by a committee of volunteers and judged the same day by independent judges, with the top scorer across the vegetable, fruit, flower and pot plant sections taking home the RHS Banksian Medal. The rules block anyone from winning that medal twice within three years, so last year's champion can't just repeat.
New classes for 2026 add a globe artichoke, a Romanesco cauliflower and a kokedama pot plant to the usual runner beans, dahlias and marrows, and Class A39, the Ugliest Vegetable, carries a cash prize from a local sponsor for whoever grows the most convincingly deformed specimen. The floral art section includes an imposed class where the theme is announced the night before, with entrants given a glass of prosecco while they arrange on the spot, and the cookery table runs a men-only bake-off using Mary Berry's coffee and walnut cake recipe.
Children's classes range from painting a clown's face to building an alien out of vegetables, and craft stalls, charity tables and live music from Jazz Alchemy fill out the green around the marquee.
By mid-afternoon the marquee turns into a running commentary on whose runner bean measured longest and who's finally caught up with last year's Banksian Medal winner.
