St Mary's Church, Bampton
About
St Mary's Church, Bampton
St Mary's Bampton is a Grade I listed parish church on the site of a late Anglo-Saxon minster, with herringbone stonework in the tower, a 13th-century spire, medieval remodelling and a carved reredos of Christ and the Apostles dating from about 1400. The church is also used as St Michael and All Angels in Downton Abbey; Churchgate House nearby was used as Crawley House.
The parish says it opens daily from 10am to 5pm and lists regular Sunday services, so visitors should check before visiting because services may affect access. The south door has a small drop, the west door has a higher step, and the chancel has three steps; a disabled toilet with baby-change facilities, hearing-aid loop and parking around the church are listed.
