Cam Peak and Cam Long Down

Cam Long Down is the more unusual of the two hills here — a long, narrow ridge that sits detached from the main Cotswold escarpment, rising to just over 700 feet above the Berkeley Vale. That separation gives it a distinct character: you can see it clearly from Dursley below, isolated and elongated against the skyline.

Cam Peak, at the southern end, is the sharper of the two summits, and the views from the top stretch west across the Severn estuary to the hills of south Wales on a clear day.

The limestone grassland across both hills supports a good mix of wildflowers through spring and summer, and the Cotswold Way runs right through, connecting to the nearby Iron Age hillfort at Uley Bury — a large multi-vallate structure dating to around 300 BC that is worth the short detour.

The most straightforward circular walk takes in both summits and covers around 3.5 to 3.7 miles, with a moderate effort level — there are some steep sections, particularly on the climb from the valley.

You can start from Dursley town centre and walk up, or drive to the free car park on the down itself (postcode GL11 5HH), which cuts the distance considerably.

Access is free and open year-round. The car park is small and fills quickly on good weekends, so an early start is worth it.
