About this event
Apollo Theatricals brings Tartuffe to the Old Kennels in Cirencester Park for four nights in July. The production uses Richard Wilbur's verse translation, which keeps Molière's rhyming couplets in English without losing the comedy or the sting.
Written in 1664 and still sharp, Tartuffe follows a supposed man of God who attaches himself to the wealthy, credulous Orgon, then proceeds to strip the family of house, money and dignity while everyone except Orgon can see exactly what he is. The satire is aimed at religious hypocrisy, blind deference to authority, and the credulity of people with money. Three hundred and sixty years on, the targets still fit.
