The Abbey Grounds bandstand hosts some of the finest free afternoons Cirencester puts on each summer, and the Bands in the Park series is the main reason. On the second Sunday of August, Gloucestershire's own Metz Big Band take the stage for two hours of proper big band jazz in the open air.

Metz are a 16-piece community band — full brass, rhythm section, vocalist and professional musical director — and they know how to fill a park. Their repertoire leans into the classics: Glenn Miller, Count Basie, standards like "In The Mood" and "Satin Doll". But they stretch well beyond the obvious, pulling in blues, Latin, funk and film themes too. Bring a blanket and something to eat.
