About this event

Chamber Music in a Cotswold Village, Played by One of Britain's Great Quartets

The Brodsky Quartet has been performing together since 1972, which is longer than most chamber groups manage to stay civil, let alone relevant. Over three thousand concerts on stages across the world, and on Tuesday 28 July they pitch up under canvas in Guiting Power for one of the Guiting Music Festival's most serious evenings.

The programme is well constructed. It opens with Bach's First Violin Sonata in a string quartet arrangement by the Brodsky's own Paul Cassidy, then moves into Britten's Third String Quartet, one of his last works, written in 1975 and still unsettling in the best way. After the interval, Martin Roscoe joins on piano for the Elgar Piano Quintet in A minor, a rich, late-Romantic piece that gets better every time you hear it and that the Brodsky and Roscoe have played together before to considerable effect.

The marquee is in the centre of Guiting Power, a small village on the Cotswold plateau that has been hosting this festival since the 1970s. It's an intimate setup — not a grand concert hall, which is entirely the point.
