A Band Mistaken for Professionals, Playing Since 1887

Cricklade Band has been playing continuously since 1887, the oldest established organisation still active in the small Wiltshire town. This September date at the Abbey Grounds falls near the end of Cirencester's Bands in the Park series, and near the end of the band's own summer season too.

The band is built around younger volunteer players rather than paid professionals, a fact that catches out plenty of first-time listeners given the polish on show. They have spent the summer working the regional bandstand circuit, including Chippenham's John Coles Park in July, and favour an accessible, contemporary programme rather than a diet of marches and hymn tunes alone.

Two hours of properly rehearsed brass in one of the nicest park settings in the Cotswolds, worth the full stretch of the afternoon.
